Great Bay 5K — A Successful Run!

Woo Hoo, Yippee, Yea!  I had a great race this morning.  It was the last race in the Seacoast Race Series, a 5K and I had one of my best times of the year!  24:28 for a 7:53 pace.  I had set a goal to break an 8 minute pace in a 5K this year, and I did it — twice.  Today, I placed 6th out of  107 in my age group — well within my goal of top 10%.  Plus, as an added bonus, I ended up on the First Place mixed team for Coastal Athletic Association.  I never quite understand how they figure out these age graded results but I’ll take it!

I am very happy with my running this season.  I started in February at an 8:54 pace, and through a lot of running, some speed work and a bunch of races, I ended at a sub 8.  Pretty good I’d say.

Now I will hang up my racing shoes (except for a Thanksgiving morning Turkey Trot), and pick up again in the early Spring.

Completed the Will Run For Beer Series!

Yesterday was the last race in the Smuttynose Will Run for Beer Series.  It was a series of 8 races from January 1-June 22–all offering a beer to runners of age, after the race!  When a  runner registers for the series and completes 5 races, they get a running jacket.  Most of the races were 5Ks although there was a 4 miler and half marathon option.  (I ran 4 5Ks and the 4 mile race).  One of the good things about this series is that it got me started running earlier in the season (my first 2 races were in March).  And the shorter distances allowed me to really work on my sped.

I did really well in the series, and while I don’t have my overall series results yet, yesterday I finished the 5K in 25:07 at a 8:06 pace.  Even better, I finished 6th out of 129 in my age group.  (I always set a goal of top 10% so this is a great result.)

And I got a great jacket!

Now it is on to some longer distances and the hot and humid summer races…

Let the Road Race Season Begin!

I started off the day with a nice flat 5K.  It was my first race in over a year and a half and it felt good!  The race was the Smuttynose Palooza and was part of the Will Run for Beer Race Series.  This is a series of   7 races, and if you complete 5 you get a Will Run for Beer Jacket — Hopefully I will be sporting that after this season! It was a beautiful day, high 30’s sunny and no wind.

The course was a flat out and back course.  It felt really good to be out there with hundreds of other runners, and even better when I turned around at the half way point and saw over half of them still behind me!  I finished with a respectable time of 27:40 (sub 9 minute miles!).  Overall I came in 302 out of 903 and 16th out of 80 in my age group (top 20%).  Not bad, but I have a lot of work to do if I am going to make my goal of running a 5K in under 25 minutes!
