Wednesday means it is time for another set of prompts in the Finish This…  link-up.  This link-up is the brain child of Nicole (Three 31), Lisa (The Coastal Chicster), Jen (The Arizona Russums), and Becky (The Java Mama).  If you’re a blogger, join in! This week’s prompts are hard for me because they are centered around Valentine’s Day and I am not a big Valentine’s Day person.  It isn’t that I don’t like romance, it is just that I don’t like having to come up with romantic things on a particular day!  To me, it is one of those “Hallmark Holidays”!

1. I celebrate Valentine’s Day by

Typically I celebrate Valentine’s Day by going out to a really nice dinner with my special guy.

2. My heart goes pitter-patter forphoto (34)

OK I was trying not to bring up my puppy (as a matter of fact, I think last week I managed to get through all the prompts without mentioning her, but since you asked, my heart goes pitter-patter for my puppy, Shakira!  She really is adorable (even when she has accidents in the house).  Such a cuddle-bug, and so tiny!  My heart really does go pitter-patter when I look at her!

3. When looking for romance, my best advice is

Be yourself…Like yourself…Do things you enjoy doing!  Basically live your life and I believe that romance will find you!

4. My favorite love story (real or fiction) is

Hmmm, this is a tough one.  I’m not overly fond of sappy books and movies that center around a love story.  They either end tragically (Love Story, Romeo and Juliet) or they are unrealistic, (An Officer and a Gentleman,  Sweet Home Alabama).  But I guess I have to admit, my favorite all time love story is The Way We Were.  Maybe it has something to do with a young Robert Redford….

5. The best relationship/love/dating advice I ever received was

One time when I was feeling down after a teenage crush, my mother said to me, “The cure for one is another”.  You have to admit this is good advise!  Especially after a major break up!

Finish This – Week 5

1. I will never outgrow …

Rock ‘n Roll

2. I splurge on …

Oh that’s an easy one — Makeup and skin care products!  And now that I’m switching to non-toxic products, I get to buy everything all over again!  I also splurge on buying organic food whenever possible, although I don’t think of this as splurging, rather it is investing in my long term health!

3. My worst habit is…

Ha!  I have several, I don’t know if it is my worst or just the one I am most aware of right now, but I would have to say my worst habit is procrastination, followed by biting my nails.

4. My passport represents …

Exciting new places!  Unfortunately there haven’t been many lately, but I renewed my passport a few years ago for a trip to Italy with my daughter.

We went to Rome, Venice and Milan and had a wonderful time, and took some nice photos too!

 5. My most ridiculous fear is…

I wouldn’t say I have a fear of flying, more like a strong apprehension.  I know all the data, it’s safer than driving, blah, blah, blah; but I still get a bit nervous when I am getting on the plane and while we are taking off (and landing), other than that, I’m good.  And truthfully, I wouldn’t call this ridiculous at all!

6. My favorite thing to give is

I’m assuming we aren’t talking about giving advise, but rather presents…

I used to like to give books, but the world is changing and truthfully I don’t even buy books for myself anymore.  I just download them to my Kindle.  Let’s see I give different things for different occasions and/or people.

For Christmas gifts, I enjoy giving really different ornaments and decorations.  But if the person doesn’t have a house or apartment, I like to give an Amazon gift card.  Slightly more personal than cash, and they can use it for anything!  For birthdays, I like to find something useful but something they wouldn’t necessarily buy themselves and this really depends on the person.  Typically for “hostess gifts” I go with a nice bottle of wine!  So I guess it is pretty obvious that I don’t have one favorite thing to give (other than advise)

Now it’s your turn. Answer these prompts in a post on your own blog or, if you do not have a blog, simply add your responses in a comment. Join us next Wednesday, February 12 for another round of Finish This where we’ll answer the prompts below!

Prompts for week Four (Wednesday, January 27):

I use my “green thumb” to Putter around in my perennial garden!  Two years ago, I had a useless patch of grass dug up and a perennial garden planted (If I really had a green thumb, I would have planted the garden myself, but after years of thinking about it, I realized that I wasn’t going to do it, and so I had a landscaper design and plant the garden.)  But I keep up with the garden, weeding, transplanting, even adding a few plants.  Last summer it was beautiful, flowers kept blooming all season.

The secret to life is Ha!  If I only knew the answer to this one!!  OK, let’s give it a try, based on my limited view of the world, I would say that the secret to life is to love ad be loved and to be healthy.  Love can be the love of a parent, spouse, lover, friend or even the love of a puppy (sorry, I was going to try to answer this week’s prompts without mentioning my puppy!) And Healthy refers to healthy in mind, body and spirit.

I get my money’s worth by Hmmm, do I get my money’s worth?  I try to shop around for lower prices, but typically I end up buying things when I see them.  I do shop the sale racks when I am looking for clothes (and shoes), but sometimes I buy the stuff that isn’t on sale too!  I figure if I pay full price for 1 thing and then get 2 or 3 items on sale, it averages out to a good price!  I don’t buy in bulk, because I don’t have a family living at home so half my groceries would go to waste. Maybe this should be one of my New Year’s Resolutions (hey, it’s still January), I should shop around more for the best value, and maybe even join BJ’s (no Costco near me) to buy non perishables at a lower cost.

On a scale of 1 to 10, my level of organization is This is an easy one 9.5!  I am very, very organized.  The only reason I didn’t give myself a 10 is that there is always room for improvement.

A gentleman always

Oh, everything that comes to mind is so cliche and sounds so old-fashioned!  A gentleman always puts the toilet seat down, opens the door for a lady, pays for dinner….I saw a great post on Nicole’s blog listing the rules for a gentleman, what do you think?

I guess what it comes down to is that a gentleman is always polite, and always treats a woman with respect.  He doesn’t look down on her, nor puts her on a pedestal, like a prized possession; but rather he gives her attention, listens to her when she speaks, helps her out when she needs help, and generally regards her as an equal.  (And opens the door for her!)

Handwritten notes are

Terrific!  I love writing (and sending) cards and letters to my friends and family.  I don’t expect them to send them back, but I enjoy knowing that they will get a little surprise in the mail.  As a matter of fact, it was Nicole, (one of the originators of the Finish This  link-up) who introduced me to the 52 Weeks, 52 Letters project.  And now I do it every year!

In this day of e-mail, text messaging it is rare to get a personal letter in the mail.  I enjoy sitting down and writing a note to a friend.  It is almost like we are visiting over a cup of tea!

Prompts for WEEK THREE (Wednesday, January 22):

1. A typical day in my life…

It’s funny I go through several months of a routine, and then something changes and I have to find a new routine, and a new typical day.  My new puppy, Shakira has thrown a huge wrench (but a wonderful one) into my typical day.  As we are in the early stages of learning to “go potty” outside my typical day revolves around taking her out constantly and is settling in to something like this:

Wake up to her stirring around 6am (yippee, not 4:00 or 5:00 as it was the first two weeks!).  Immediately throw on some sweats, carry her downstairs, put on her harness, her coat (it’s cold out in NH!), her leash, hold her and slip into my coat, gloves and boots and go outside.  Luckily she does her business quickly.  Then we come inside and I feed her.  She nibbles, plays a little, goes outside again, then goes to sleep for several hours.  Phew, now I eat breakfast, do my Sudoku puzzle (or if it is early in the week, continue to work on Sunday’s crossword puzzle). Next, upstairs to my computer to check email, Facebook, etc. and start working (I work from home).

Around lunchtime, Shakira wakes up.  We do the outside routine again.  I have some lunch and play with her a bit, take her out again, then back upstairs to work while she plays with her toys and eventually naps again.
Evening is pretty much the same.  Cook something yummy for dinner, eat, clean up, play with the doggie, take her out (multiple times), read or watch TV, and bed around 10 or 11.  Sometimes, I go out for dinner with friends and she stays in her playpen in the kitchen.  When I get home she is sooo excited to see me.  We play until one of us is exhausted, then off to bed!

Now hopefully I will be able to add running or going to the gym or yoga back into my routine sometime SOON!

2. You’ll never see me…

Hmm, I have a Not to Do bucket list.  On it are things like skydiving.  I’m adventurous, but I’m not into extreme anything, so you won’t see me jumping out of an airplane, para-sailing, hang-gliding, bungee jumping, ice climbing or anything like that!  I do run, and I have run a few half marathons, but I have no intention of ever training for or running a full marathon.  You also won’t see me in Times Square on New Year’s Eve or at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (unless I meet up with  someone with a penthouse along the parade route!)

3. It’s really unattractive when a guy/girl…

Call me old fashioned, but one of my pet peeves is when a girl purposely shows her bra straps.  Like wearing a regular bra with a racer back shirt.   You know you can easily get a racer back bra!

Another thing I find beyond unattractive and luckily this doesn’t seem to be in vogue anymore is when a girl’s thong strap shows above her pants.  To me, these are fashion don’ts! — tacky, skanky and class-less!

4. If I could buy one thing right now, it would be…

Oh this is hard right after Christmas.  I got the things I wanted for Christmas (I-pod, jambox) and then some other great things (clothes and a puppy!) so it is tough to come up with something I want to buy…but i would like these Frye boots!

5. I have high expectations for…

My kids!  They are strong, determined go-getters and I know they will succeed in life. By succeed, I mean that they will be happy and productive in their endeavors, and love and be loved by their family and friends.

Finish This Week 2

OK, I was seriously upstaged last week by bloggers who had clever posts and lots of great photos.  I’ll try to get a little more creative this week!  Bloggers if you want to join in the fun Check the link-up link below to add your post and read other bloggers’ Finish This… posts.

Prompts for Week Two (January 15)

Tree at Newcastle--Summer

1. If I could make anything grow on trees, it would be…

Well the obvious answer would be — money, the altruistic answer would be — enough food to feed the world, or world peace, but that sounds like I am a beauty contest contestant!  What would I like?…

I would like a new fashionable wardrobe every season, complete with fabulous (and comfortable) shoes.  That would be cool, a tree that blooms twice a year and provides fall/winter and sprint/summer clothing (and shoes)!  No more searching for a great pair of jeans or black boots.  No more standing in front of the closet trying to put together a great outfit with outdated pieces!

I would also like to see my (grown) kids more often.  They live in another state, so if I could make them grow on the tree outside my house, and conversely make myself grow on a tree near them that would be great — sort of like being transported to their door at will!

2. I can’t stop smiling…When I look  at my adorable puppy!  2013-12-29 11.14.14

I know, I keep talking about her, but she is soooo adorable.  I don’t even mind getting up at 5:00, because when she wakes me up and I hug her she is such a love!  Her name is Shakira and she is a Shih Tzu/Pekingese mix.  Some fun facts…Did you know that the Shih Tzu was originally a mix between the Pekingese and the Lhasa Apso?  And the Pekingese (names from the ancient city of Peking) were considered sacred dogs and semi-devine.  They could only be owned by Chinese royalty, and the people had to bow to them. Unfortunately when an emperor died, his Pekingese was sacrificed so that the dog could go with him to give protection in the afterlife. In 1860 the British overtook the Chinese Imperial Palace. Chinese Imperial Guards were ordered to kill the little dogs to prevent them from falling into the hands of the “foreign devils.” Five of the Pekingese survived and were given to Queen Victoria. It was from these five dogs that the modern day Pekingese descended. (source: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/pekingese.htm)

3. I get back to nature by…

Walking or running outside.

4. I dread washing…Sweaters by hand!

The actual washing is a pain because my hands get cold, but even worse is trying to squeeze the excess water out of the sweater so it will dry in a reasonable amount of time.  Then the fun of walking around the sweaters that are lying about all over the floor drying.  I might need one of these,  they are stackable too!

Prompts for WEEK THREE (Wednesday, January 22):

2. You’ll never see me
