2013 — My Year in Review

First-Night-PortsmouthMy cousin, and blog friend Lisa, has posted this Year in Review on her blog every year for the past 10 years.  I think it is a great way to look back on the year and share some of its highlights (and low lights), and so I took up the practice.  This is my third annual Year in Review.  (Feel free to check out my earlier posts 2011 and 2012).

This is a fun exercise and a great way to summarize the year and I recommend that you gives it a try.  Let me know if you do!

What did you do in 2013 that you’d never done before?  I flew to Atlanta all by myself and met up with 9 of my cousins to go to the Auburn vs. Ole Miss football game.  We rented a house and had a fabulous 4 days touring the campus, partying with my cousin’s kids and their friends (who attend Auburn), tailgating, yelling War Eagle! at the game, and even visiting Olympic Park in Atlanta before heading home.

Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I kept a lot of them and posted ‎my successes and failures.  I always make New Year’s resolutions but for the past few years I have written them down and kept track of them through the year which really made a difference in terms of keeping them!  I will definitely make more for 2014 and will post them on this blog.

Did anyone close to you give birth? No one this year, and no one in the running…yet….

Did anyone close to you die? My cousin’s husband Sal died earlier in 2012.  We weren’t close but he was family.

What countries did you visit? No foreign countries this year, and actually, I didn’t visit any place in the US that I hadn’t been before but I traveled to: Waitsfield, Vt (Sugarbush) for a ski trip with my kids; New Jersey to visit relatives;  D.C. and Northern Virginia to visit my kids; many trips along the coast of Maine throughout to summer (both by car and boat).  In August, my sister-in-law visited me and we spent time in York Beach and Boothbay Harbor.  And lastly, I made several trips to Newport, Rhode Island including going to a spectacular wedding at the Rosecliff Mansion over Labor Day weekend.

What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?  I can honestly say that I didn’t lack anything in 2013.  Some things I would like to do in 2013 are to take some local New England ski days and/or weekends, go ice skating, and take a family trip with my kids (haha this is the same thing I said last year!)

What date from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory? April 15. The very sad day of the Boston Marathon.  While this was a horrific act, I was very proud of the way the Boston and running community came together not only to offer support, but more importantly to catch the bombers so quickly.

What was your biggest achievement of the year? My biggest achievement of 2013 was getting my 94 year old father to move to an independent living community near to where I live.  He had been living 6 hours away in New Jersey, and as I am an only child and  he is getting on in age (but is still active and very healthy), it really was important that he be closer to me.  So not only is he now living 3 miles away in a wonderful, safe community, but he likes it too!

What was your biggest failure? I honestly can’t categorize anything as a failure in 2013.

Did you suffer illness or injury? No! I was nice and healthy in 2013, and I plan to keep it that way!

What was the best thing you bought?  I’m not saying that I didn’t buy myself anything this year, I certainly did, but nothing very special.  BUT I did receive a lot of great things for Christmas…a new I-pod and a Jambox for starters, and a new Puppy!!!

Whose behavior merited celebration? Once again this year, my children share this honor; Kelsey for working hard and earning recognition for her job, moving to a great apartment by herself, and staying sane during major transitions!  And Taylor and Nora for buying their first home.

Where did most of your money go? As in years past, most of my money went to savings and my mortgage payments.  Other big expenses for me were clothes, dinners out, and Christmas presents!

What did you get really, really, really excited about?   My biggest excitement this year came at the end of the year,2013-12-29 13.03.11and that would be my new PUPPY!  She is totally adorable and I am sure she will be very, very spoiled

What song will always remind you of 2013? Babel by Mumford and Sons and Will You Still Love Me by Lana Del Rey

Compared to this time last year, are you:
Happier or sadder? — Happier
Thinner or fatter? – The same weight as I’ve been most of my adult life
Richer or poorer? – Richer

What do you wish you’d done more of? Skiing, running.

What do you wish you’d done less of? I can honestly say I think I was good about not wasting time this year.  My first response was going to be watching television, but then I realized that I did manage to read 23 books this year so I don’t think I wasted a lot of time!  Perhaps shoveling snow would be a good response.  We had a few big storm in the beginning of 2013, and I’ve already shoveled a bit at the end of 2013!

How will you be (or did you) spend Christmas? I had a great Christmas season family.  I celebrated Christmas with my 2013-12-15 09.23.40daughter Kelsey, my son Taylor, and my daughter-in-law Nora a little early this year as they were all going to be away for Christmas.  We had a wonderful time.  We visited with each other and with some of Nora’s family, whom I hadn’t seen since the wedding last year.  We opened presents around the Christmas tree and had a lot of fun.

For Christmas Eve, my father and I spent time with his sister (my Aunt), two of her children (my cousins) and their kids.  The “kids” ranged in age from 21-37!  It was great to see them as I usually don’t get to spend time with this side of the family.

On Christmas Day I went to another wonderful dinner at another cousin’s home, and again had fun eating, drinking, socializing and just being together!

Then on Saturday, Dec 28, I picked up my puppy!  What a cutie!

Did you fall in love in 2013?  Falling in love with Shakira (my puppy)!

Who were your best friends? My best friends don’t change, so I’m going to change this question to: “Did you make a new friend this year and/or get closer to a friend or an acquaintance?”  I didn’t make any new friends this year, but I kept up my resolution to get together with friends at least twice a month, and I think that has lead to some stronger relationships with Rhonda, Lorri, Jen.  I am going to keep at this in 2014.

What thing did you do that was meaningful to others?  I hope that encouraging my Dad to move up here and helping him with his move was meaningful to him in a  positive way!

What was your favorite TV program? My favorite shows are Parenthood, The Crazy Ones, Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones.

Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year? Oh let’s phrase this differently, “Have any of your relationships worsened over the past year?” — No

What was the best book you read? Wow this is a tough one, I read of bunch of books this year that I enjoyed, John Irving’s, In One Person; William Martin’s Harvard Yard, Susanna Kearsley’s The Firebrand, Michael Pollan’s Cooked, Matt Haig’s The Radleys, but the book I was most happy to have read was A Memory of Light, Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson mainly because this was the 14th and FINAL book of The Wheel of Time series that began in 1990!

What was your greatest musical discovery? I discovered a few good bands/singers this year, Mumford and Sons, The Avett Brothers, Dawes, Avicii and Jake Bugg immediately come to mind.

What did you want and get? A new I-pod and a Jam box!

What did you want and not get? There is nothing tangible that I did not get.  I would like to get to spend more time with my kids.

What was your favorite film of this year? The Heat with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.  One of the funniest movies I have ever seen!

What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I went out to dinner with a special friend for my 54th birthday.

What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? My year was completely satisfying, but if I could ask for something more, it would be a booming economy and higher real estate prices in my area!

What kept you sane? Eating healthy, exercise, reading and spending the spring and summer on the water.

Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? I really don’t have much use for celebrities, and our public figures leave much to be desired!  But, I’d say the birth of Prince George was pretty special (at least for England).

What political issue stirred you the most? It would have to be Obama-care.

Who did you miss? My family when I’m away from them, and my mother

Who was the best new person you met this year? I think the only new people I met this year (other than to say a quick hello) was the dog breeder Denise and her husband Larry.  I really have to get out of my comfort circle a bit this year!

Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013:  Live in the present moment, change the things you can and accept the things you can’t.

Quote that sums up your year:  Keep Calm and Carry On

Happy New Year to all!
